Amsterdam, the capital of the Netherlands, is a gorgeous, fairytale-like city, often called the Venice of the North. Canals, tulips, wooden shoes, and windmills are all things that come to my mind when thinking about the Netherlands. I’ve been to Amsterdam three times, and have created this 3 day Amsterdam itinerary that includes a perfect mix of historic charm, cultural highlights, and local experiences.

There’s something for everyone, from world-class museums like the Van Gogh Museum and Anne Frank House to picturesque canals and unique neighborhoods like Jordaan.

I also highly recommend simply strolling through the streets and along canals, and wandering in and out of the many cute shops (my personal favorite random find? The Amsterdam Cheese Museum – yes, they have samples🤤🧀)!

Also, be sure to check out a lively brewery or pub, the many cafes, legal Dutch ‘coffee shops’ (they don’t sell coffee here…), get up close to a houseboat or two, and even go tulip spotting (only in the Spring)! Getting lost in this city is one of my favorite activities.

Amsterdam is an incredible city to explore, but costs can add up fast. That’s why I have hand-picked all of the recommendations below to keep budget in mind—helping you experience the best of the city without overspending.

From affordable eats to free activities and money-saving passes, this itinerary is designed to give you an amazing Amsterdam adventure without breaking the bank.

So, grab a bike, embrace the adventure, and let Amsterdam surprise you at every turn!

Before You Head Out

For a complete guide to the Netherlands basics, click here! If you’re short on time though, here are the key highlights.

Getting Around in Amsterdam 🚲🚆🚋

Public Transport: Amsterdam’s trams, buses, and metro make getting around super easy. The OV-chipkaart is your go-to for public transport—just tap in and out. You can also buy single-use tickets, but multi-day passes save money if you’re staying a while.

Biking Culture: Want to explore like a local? Rent a bike! 🚲 Amsterdam is one of the most bike-friendly cities in the world, but be sure to follow cycling rules—locals ride fast!

Taxis & Rideshares: Uber works well in Amsterdam, but it’s pricier than public transport. Taxis are available, but they can be expensive and aren’t always the quickest option.

ALSO – Heads up! If you’re using Uber in Amsterdam, be aware that regulations restrict where drivers can pick up passengers. This means your pick-up location might not be exactly where you expect. Double-check the app’s instructions to avoid any confusion—I learned this the hard way! 🚶‍♀️😅

Cash or Card in Amsterdam 💳💶

Most places in Amsterdam prefer card payments, and some even don’t accept cash at all! A contactless debit or credit card (or Apple/Google Pay) is the best way to pay for things like transport, restaurants, and shops. If you need cash, ATMs are easy to find, but you won’t need it often.

Weather in Amsterdam 🌦🌡

Amsterdam’s weather can be unpredictable—one minute it’s sunny, the next it’s raining. Expect mild summers (but occasional heat waves!) and cold, damp winters. No matter when you visit, pack a rain jacket and an umbrella (this one even has 50+ UV protection so you can use it on hot days too!) – rain showers are common year-round! In winter, layer up because the wind can be brutal, especially near the canals.

Getting To and Around Amsterdam

Amsterdam is an amazing city to explore, and getting there (or getting around once you arrive) is super easy! ✈️🚲 Thanks to its well-connected public transport, bike-friendly streets, and easy airport access, you’ll have no trouble navigating.

Whether you’re flying into Schiphol, hopping on a tram, or pedaling around like a true local, there’s a way to get around that fits every travel style. 🚆✨

From Schiphol Airport

If you’re flying into Amsterdam, Schiphol Airport is your main point of entry. It’s located just 10 kilometers (6.2 miles) southwest of the city center, and getting from the airport to the heart of Amsterdam is easy.

Here are your best transport options:

  • $ Train: Direct trains from Schiphol Airport take around 15-20 minutes to Amsterdam Central Station. They’re fast, reliable, and cost-effective. Check Dutch Railways (NS) for schedules.
  • $$ Bus: The Amsterdam Airport Express (Bus 397) connects the airport to major parts of the city. It’s slightly slower than the train but drops you closer to popular neighborhoods.
  • $$$ Taxi or ride-share: These are convenient if you have bulky luggage or want door-to-door service. However, as noted above, they are much more expensive than public transport.

To save on transport costs, consider purchasing a GVB multi-day ticket or using a reloadable OV-Chipkaart. These cards cover not only your airport-to-city ride but also additional travel within Amsterdam.

Getting Around: Using Public Transport

Amsterdam boasts an impressive public transport system with trams, buses, metros, and ferries. For tourists, using this network is as simple as getting an OV-Chipkaart or using contactless payment options like debit cards.

  • Trams: These iconic blue-and-white vehicles are a great way to navigate central areas.
  • Buses and metros: Ideal for reaching destinations outside the central zone.
  • Ferries: Free ferries connect Amsterdam Central to areas north of the IJ River—offering not just convenience but also a scenic ride!

To maximize your experience, grab a GVB day ticket or a city card that offers unlimited travel for 24 to 72 hours. It’s the perfect solution for short stays and fits seamlessly into your 3-day Amsterdam itinerary.

Renting a Bicycle

Amsterdam and bicycles go hand in hand. With flat terrain, wide bike lanes, and a culture built around two wheels, cycling is the quintessential way to explore. Most rental shops charge about €10-€15 ($10 – $15) per day, with discounts for longer rentals. Reserve your bike here!

A few need-to-know tips for biking in Amsterdam:

  1. Stick to bike paths: They’re clearly marked and ensure a smoother ride.
  2. Keep safety first: Always use hand signals before turning, and stay alert, especially at intersections with trams and buses. And please, please, please, wear a helmet! Rental shops should have these available.
    • PRO TIP: Hand signals are different than they are in the US. To turn right, extend your right arm out straight horizontally. To turn left, do the opposite and extend your left arm out straight horizontally.
  3. Lock your bike securely: Bike theft is common, so use a strong chain and frame lock. Rental shops should include these, or provide them for an extra fee.

Check out this article before hopping on your bike – it’s packed with rules and tips!

Cycling is a great way to cover significant ground, whether you’re cruising through Vondelpark or admiring the canals. But remember: follow the rules and adopt local biking etiquette to make the most of your experience.

These easy transportation options should set you up for an amazing 3-day Amsterdam adventure!

Day 1: Exploring the Heart of Amsterdam

There are so many incredible sights and experiences in Amsterdam. Starting your trip in the historic center is the perfect way to set the tone for an unforgettable 3-day itinerary. Here’s how to kick off your first day.

Breakfast at The Pancake Bakery 🥞

Start your day at The Pancake Bakery, one of Amsterdam’s most well-loved spots for Dutch pancakes and hearty breakfast dishes. Housed in a 17th-century canal house, this cozy restaurant serves up massive, thin, and fluffy pancakes with an endless variety of toppings.

Go classic with powdered sugar and stroop (Dutch syrup), or try something more indulgent like banana and Nutella, apples with cinnamon, or bacon and cheese. They also have international-inspired flavors, including a Mexican pancake with guacamole and salsa and a French-style crêpe with Brie and walnuts.

🔥 PRO TIP: The portions are huge, so come hungry! If you’re traveling with someone, consider sharing so you have room to try more flavors.

Tour the Anne Frank House

After breakfast, make your way to one of Amsterdam’s most powerful and moving landmarks—the Anne Frank House. This small, unassuming building holds an immense history. It’s where Anne Frank and her family hid for over two years during World War II, and where she wrote her famous diary while trying to survive Nazi persecution.

Today, the house is a museum that offers a deeply personal look into the Holocaust and the impact of war. Visitors can step inside the secret annex, walk through the well-preserved rooms, and see historical artifacts that bring Anne’s story to life. Expect an emotionally profound experience.

🔥 PRO TIP: Plan ahead! Tickets are only sold online, and they sell out months in advance! You can choose between a standard museum visit or a museum visit + a 30-minute presentation. The presentation gives deeper context to Anne’s life and the exhibits you’re about to see. Check the official Anne Frank House website for availability and booking details.

For a deeper look into Anne Frank’s life and World War II history, consider one of the many walking tours to complement your Anne Frank House visit.

Lunch at SLA 🥗🍞

After visiting the Anne Frank House, you might need a moment to process the experience before jumping back into the day.

SLA, a bright and welcoming café nearby, offers a peaceful place to sit, reflect, and recharge with something fresh and nourishing.

Known for its affordably priced organic grain bowls, vibrant salads, and hearty sourdough sandwiches, SLA is a great spot for a wholesome, comforting meal.

Pair your meal with a homemade lemonade or a warm matcha latte, and take your time before heading back out to explore the city.

Amsterdam Tulip Museum 🌷

After lunch, take a quick walk to this small but fascinating museum that dives into the history of the Netherlands’ famous flowers. Unlike the massive tulip fields outside the city, this museum lets you explore the story behind the blooms—from the 17th-century Tulip Mania to modern-day cultivation.

Inside, you’ll find interactive exhibits, historical artifacts, and rare tulip varieties. It’s a great stop if you’re curious about how tulips became a symbol of the Netherlands (and how they once sparked an actual financial craze!).

🌷 Fun Fact! Tulips are not actually native to the Netherlands. They were originally gifted by Turkey in the 16th century and quickly became a status symbol among the Dutch elite.

The museum also has a gift shop filled with tulip-related souvenirs, including postcards, books, and tulip-inspired ceramics.

💡 IMPORTANT NOTE: The shop sells tulip bulbs, but keep in mind that many countries (including the U.S.) have strict customs regulations on bringing bulbs home. If you’re tempted, check your country’s import rules first or opt for other tulip-themed souvenirs instead!

Amsterdam Cheese Museum 🧀

Almost directly next door to the Tulip Museum, the Amsterdam Cheese Museum is a cheese-lover’s dream. It’s more of a cheese shop + mini-museum combo, but it’s totally worth a visit!

Inside, you’ll find free cheese tastings (yes, you can try all the Gouda your heart desires) and learn about the history of Dutch cheese-making. There’s even a cheese-themed photo op, where you can dress up like a traditional Dutch cheesemaker—because why not?

If you love cheese, this spot is a fun and quick stop before heading to your next adventure.

Explore Jordaan Neighborhood

After visiting the Amsterdam Cheese Museum, take a leisurely stroll into Jordaan, one of Amsterdam’s most picturesque neighborhoods. It’s just a short walk from the museum, and the route takes you along charming canals and historic streets.

Once a working-class district, Jordaan has transformed into a trendy, artsy neighborhood filled with narrow streets, peaceful canals, and postcard-worthy houses.

  • Wander through De 9 Straatjes (The Nine Streets), a cluster of boutique shops, quirky stores, and cozy cafés.
  • Look for hidden courtyards tucked behind historic houses.
  • Enjoy a coffee at a canal-side café and soak in the local vibe. Jordaan is the perfect place to slow down, explore at your own pace, and take in the beauty of Amsterdam.

🍽️ Dinner at Effendy

For a budget-friendly, satisfying, and comforting meal, Effendy is a fantastic spot for a warm, flavorful meal in a cozy, welcoming setting.

Located in the Jordaan neighborhood, this café serves up authentic Turkish dishes that are both affordable and filling—perfect after a long day of exploring.

🔥 Bonus: The portions are generous, so come hungry!

Evening at A’DAM Lookout 🌆

End your first day with panoramic 360° views at A’DAM Lookout, one of Amsterdam’s most iconic viewpoints. From the observation deck, you’ll see the city skyline, canals, and beyond. Feeling daring? Try Europe’s highest swing, where you’ll soar over the edge for an unforgettable adrenaline rush.

Easily accessible by ferry from Amsterdam Central Station, this is the perfect spot to watch the sunset and take in the city from above.

Reservations are highly recommended, so grab your tickets in advance, or use your I Amsterdam City Card for free entrance and to skip the lines and enjoy a seamless experience!

After an exciting first day of your 3-day Amsterdam itinerary, unwinding with a drink and breathtaking views at A’DAM Lookout is the perfect way to end the night on a high note.

The Sunflowers - one of Van Gogh's most famous painting. A stop on day 2 of your 3 day Amsterdam itinerary

Day 2: Art and Local Charm

Your second day in Amsterdam is all about diving into the city’s artistic side and soaking up its charm. From world-class museums to cozy cafés and peaceful parks, today offers the perfect mix of inspiration and relaxation.

Breakfast at Blushing ☕🍓

Start your morning with a healthy, energizing breakfast at Blushing, near Museumplein. Enjoy smoothie bowls, avocado toast, yogurt with granola, or protein-packed eggs—light yet filling for a day of museum-hopping. Need caffeine? Their oat milk cappuccino is a local favorite!

Visit the Rijksmuseum & Van Gogh Museum

Start your morning at Museumplein (Museum Square), home to two of Amsterdam’s most iconic museums: the Rijksmuseum and the Van Gogh Museum.

At the Rijksmuseum, step into Dutch history through masterpieces like Rembrandt’s The Night Watch and Vermeer’s The Milkmaid. Wander through the breathtaking Great Hall, explore the 17th-century dollhouses, and admire centuries of Dutch art. Arrive early to beat the crowds and fully enjoy the experience.

Visit the Van Gogh Museum

Just steps from the Rijksmuseum, the Van Gogh Museum houses the world’s largest collection of his works, offering an intimate look at his artistic genius and struggles. Highlights include Sunflowers, The Potato Eaters, Almond Blossom, and Skull of a Skeleton with Burning Cigarette. The museum also features self-portraits, landscapes, and works from artists who influenced him.

A visit here is both inspiring and emotional, with exhibits showcasing Van Gogh’s personal letters and life story. As one of Amsterdam’s most popular attractions, tickets sell out fast, so book well in advance. The Rijksmuseum also gets busy, so reserving ahead ensures a smoother visit. Check their official websites for seasonal hours.

Lunch at Vondelpark 🍃🥪

After a morning of art, take a short walk to Vondelpark, Amsterdam’s largest and most famous city park. Make sure to check out the rose garden with over 70 species of flowers! It’s the perfect place to relax and recharge before continuing your day.

For a laid-back, scenic lunch, grab a meal from Bagels & Beans, a cute bagel and coffee shop. Take your tasty food to-go, and have a picnic in the park.

Heineken Experience 🍺

After lunch, head to the Heineken Experience, an interactive museum dedicated to Amsterdam’s most famous beer. Located in the former Heineken brewery, this self-guided tour takes you through the history of Heineken, the beer-making process, and even includes a tasting session at the end.

The experience includes interactive exhibits, a 4D “brewery ride”, and plenty of photo-worthy spots for beer lovers. Even if you’re not a big beer drinker, it’s a fun, immersive way to learn about Amsterdam’s brewing culture.

🔥 PRO TIP: Tickets often sell out, so it’s best to book in advance online. You’ll also be able to skip the line. This is one of the most popular attractions in Amsterdam, so it sells out quickly!

Canal Cruise 🚤

No trip to Amsterdam is complete without a canal cruise—and lucky for you, there are so many different types of canal cruises! From chese and wine tours, to audio only tours, to smoke and lounge cruises, there is seriously a cruise for everyone!

This round-up of canal cruises leave from a dock nearby the Heineken Experience, making getting around a breeze.

🍽️ Dinner at Brasserie Zuiderbad

After your canal tour, you’ll probably be ready for dinner. This restaurant is close to the Rijksmuseum, close to where you’ll be dropped off. Brasserie Zuiderbad is a cozy café offering casual Dutch fare at reasonable prices. It’s a great spot with views of the museum and nearby water.

2 stroopwafels with various toppings. You'll see this on day 2 of your 3 day Amsterdam itinerary.

Stroopwafels 🍪

📝NOTE – If you’ve seen the Insta-worthy van Wonderen Stroopwafels, you may want to skip it. While the shop itself is super cute (you can definitely stop by for a photo op if you want!), the lines are long, the stroopwafels are very overpriced, and the customer service is lacking.

End your night with a freshly made stroopwafel from Firma Stroop—one of Amsterdam’s best local spots for this Dutch treat. Unlike mass-produced versions, theirs are made to order for the perfect crispy wafer, gooey caramel, and buttery warmth. Choose a classic or try fun toppings like nuts, chocolate drizzle, or sea salt for an extra flavor boost. Either way, you can’t go wrong!

Day 2 of your 3-day Amsterdam itinerary is all about balancing culture, relaxation, and indulgence—onto Day 3! 🚲✨

Day 3: Markets, History & Iconic Sights

Your final day in Amsterdam is all about soaking in local culture, browsing unique markets, and exploring historic landmarks. From charming canals to bustling squares, today’s itinerary blends sightseeing with a laid-back vibe.

🍞 Breakfast at Café de Jaren

Start your final morning in Amsterdam with a relaxing breakfast at Café de Jaren, a bright and airy spot with beautiful canal views.

Located near the Floating Flower Market, it’s the perfect place to enjoy a slow morning before diving into the day’s adventures.

🔥 Bonus: Their waterfront seating makes for a great photo op! 📸

Explore Local Markets

Saving shopping for the end of your trip helps immensely with your budget! You know how much you have left, and likely will have an idea of what you want to buy the most!

Amsterdam’s markets offer a great mix of vintage bargains, local food, and cultural flair. One standout is the Waterlooplein Flea Market, the oldest in the Netherlands.

After breakfast, check out the over 300 stalls; you’ll find second-hand clothing, antique treasures, books, and quirky souvenirs.

It’s open Monday to Saturday, so it’s perfect for your 3 day Amsterdam itinerary. Check out the Waterlooplein Market website for the most up-to-date info!

🏠 See the Iconic Dancing Houses

The Dancing Houses (or Dancing Ladies) are some of Amsterdam’s most photographed canal houses. These tilted, narrow, and colorful buildings date back to the 17th century and have become a symbol of the city’s charm and history.

The unique tilt of these houses comes from Amsterdam’s swampy soil, which has caused them to settle over time. While most people admire them from the outside, you can actually stay inside a canal house if you want a truly immersive experience!

📍 Where to See Them: Head to the corner of Damrak and look across the canal for one of the best views.

A closeup of a bunch of pink flowers and tulips in Amsterdam. You'll see this on day 3 of your 3 day Amsterdam itinerary.

🌷 Visit the Floating Flower Market (Bloemenmarkt)

No trip to Amsterdam is complete without a stop at Bloemenmarkt, the world’s only floating flower market, located along Singel Canal between Muntplein and Koningsplein.

This colorful market is a feast for the senses, with fresh flowers, tulip bulbs, Dutch souvenirs, and seasonal plants filling the stalls.

🥙 Lunch at Sandwichshop Amsterdam | Langebrugsteeg

By now, you’ve done plenty of walking—it’s time for a well-earned meal! Sandwichshop Amsterdam is quick, delicious, and budget-friendly. Whether you’re craving a classic Dutch broodje (sandwich) with aged cheese, fresh ham, or smoked salmon, or something more inventive with local ingredients, there’s no shortage of great options.

🔥 Bonus: Grab your sandwich to-go and enjoy it by the canals for a true Amsterdam experience!

🏛️ Walk Through Dam Square & Visit the Royal Palace

After lunch, head to Dam Square, the historic heart of Amsterdam. This bustling plaza is surrounded by major landmarks, making it a perfect spot to take in the city’s energy and history.

One of the square’s highlights is the Royal Palace of Amsterdam. Originally built in 1648 as the city’s Town Hall, it was later transformed into a royal residence by King Louis Bonaparte. Inside, you’ll find massive chandeliers, impressive sculptures, and centuries-old artwork.

The palace occasionally closes for royal events, so check the schedule before your visit. You can buy tickets in advance or at the entrance.

🍟 Late-Night Bites: A Dutch Fast-Food Classic

After your cruise, grab a quick but delicious dinner at FEBO—a famous Dutch fast-food chain where you can grab hot, crispy croquettes, burgers, or sandwiches from vending-style machines (don’t worry, the food is made fresh!). It’s super affordable, tasty, and very Dutch.

🔥 PRO TIP: If you get fries, make sure to ask for a side of fritessaus (fry sauce). It’s a typical Dutch sauce similar to mayonnaise, but has way less fat and is a little sweeter

Exploring Amsterdam’s Red Light District

After fueling up, it’s time to hit up Amsterdam’s Red Light District. It’s one of the city’s most well-known neighborhoods, blending history, culture, and curiosity in a way that’s uniquely Amsterdam.

While it’s often associated with nightlife, the area is also home to narrow streets, quirky museums, and centuries-old architecture—making it an interesting stop during the day as well.

I’ve walked through the Red Light District all three times I’ve visited Amsterdam, and it’s not quite as seedy as I was expecting. One of my visits, I walked through the district on a Saturday morning around 11 AM, and if I hadn’t been actively looking for it, I might have missed it.

The atmosphere was surprisingly calm, with locals going about their day, and I even saw a couple strolling through with their toddler. During daylight hours, it feels more like a quiet, historic part of town, making it ideal for a casual walk or photography.

At night, the district takes on a different energy, and if you choose to explore in the evening, be sure to stay respectful and follow the rules. Photography of the workers is strictly forbidden, and showing respect for those who work there is non-negotiable.

If you’re curious about the district’s history, consider a walking tour, or visiting the Red Light Secrets Museum of Prostitution for a deeper look into its past.
